An interesting night

Imagine that your brother John Watson is getting married and has invited you and (Y/BF/N), your best friend, to the ceremony and the after party. You accidentally meet John's friends including his very handsome best friend Sherlock Holmes while you wander around waiting for the wedding to start. During the after party you sit in the corner because you're a wall flower unlike your best friend (Y/BF/N) who already has a dance partner. That is until you're asked to dance by none other than Sherlock.

Oh don’t you dare look back
Just keep your eyes on me
I said you’re holding back
He said shut up and dance with me
This man is my destiny
He said oh, oh, oh
Shut up and dance with me

You loved your big brother. You really did. What you hated about your current predicament was a list of things. First, you hated wearing dresses and would've much rather worn a T-shirt, yoga pants, your favorite Star Wars socks, and your Chuck Taylor converse. Never mind high heels. You wore your chucks anyway, even if it did look tacky with a dress. Second, you didn't know most of the people that were going to be at the ceremony. A few faces were familiar like your parents, your cousins, (Y/BF/N), and John's best friend who's name still alluded you. Almost everyone else was going to be your in-laws. Third, you did not like nor trust Mary. You didn't like how she acted so innocent and almost fake around you and John. For the sake of your older brother's happiness though, you kept your mouth shut like a locked door. John meant the world to you and you always looked up to him. He was the reason you became a writer, especially after reading some of his amazing blogs.

You were getting dressed along with a few of your cousins and a really nice girl that John had introduced to you. The girl was named Molly Hooper and she was a lot like you, quirky and quiet. According to John she ran the morgue at Saint Bart's Hospital and at first you had a chill creep up your spine, but after actually talking to her and getting to know her it wasn't so bad. In fact you really liked her. Molly had disappeared from the room when she had finished getting ready so you only assumed that she was probably wandering around talking to a few of the other guests that were arriving. You decided to follow suit after you finished getting your hair done because you really didn't want to hear the sappy gossip that your cousins were going on about. You grabbed your small bouquet of flowers and began to wander the halls of the slowly filling church.

"So can you dance Sherlock?" You heard Molly's voice ask from one of the rooms. You were slightly nosy so you decided to peek around the slightly ajar door. You saw John's best friend twirling rather elegantly in a circle, almost like a male version of a pirouette. You couldn't help, but stare at the tall man dressed nicely in a dark tuxedo with a little yellow flower pinned to his chest. He was the best man after all. You gulped silently as you realized that he was going to be the one leading you down the aisle since you were the maid of honor (Not by choice might I add). He looked almost exactly as John had described him. On his head were dark and shaggy curls that bounced around when he moved ever so slightly, his eyes were a perfectly blue with flecks of green and gold, and he had very definite cheek bones. John had told you that his best friend was a rather interesting character and of course by reading his blog stories you could certainly tell. You had read about mysteries solved and unsolved, bullet holes in the wall from days where the word ‘BORED’ was shouted over gun fire, and the daily domestic escapades that belonged with living in a flat with such a flat mate. There was a small voice in your head that was trying to remember his name, but somehow you still couldn’t remember his name. You wanted to learn it, be able to say it so that you wouldn’t be so awkward when you two walked together down the aisle and then separated at your respected places. There was also that awkward part of you that wondered if you should go and talk to him now.

Suddenly you were brought out of your thoughts when you heard Molly. “Hey (Y/N)!” She said cheerfully from her spot next to John’s friend. You blushed as you realized that you had been caught watching them. “H-hey Molly” You said nervously and shyly as you entered the room. You noticed John’s friend studying you intently making you feel slightly uncomfortable. When Molly noticed this she jabbed the man in the side with her elbow. “Oi! What was that for Molly?” The man’s deep baritone voice asked with a slight bit of confusion in it. You blushed a bit darker because you found that you liked the sound of his voice. It was deep and smooth like silk, something you could listen to at night when you couldn’t sleep. “Sherlock you’re making John’s baby sister uncomfortable. (Y/N) this is your brother’s best friend Sherlock Holmes” Molly introduced causing Sherlock to raise his eyebrows in surprise for once. “Right, um… sorry about that… you’re (Y/N) Watson then?” Sherlock asked with a tiny crinkle of his lips, a gesture that looked like a ghostly smile. “Y-yes I am…Wow I didn’t know my brother was best friends with London’s best detective” You answered looking up into his eyes again and seeing a bit of curiosity in them. His smile grew just a little more and he held out his hand for you to shake. “It’s not important, but it’s nice to meet another Watson that doesn’t want to kill me” Sherlock said causing you to try and hold back your giggles because you remembered the time when your brother was told to punch Sherlock in the face. You gently took his hand and gave him a proper handshake. “It’s nice to finally meet you to Mr. Holmes, thank you for protecting my big brother” You answered honestly. Both of you were reluctant to let go of the other’s hand, but it was you that ended up having to.

The moment was ended when you heard (Y/BF/N) call you from the dressing room not far down the hallway. You rolled your eyes and gave your new friends an apologetic look. Sherlock raised a curious eyebrow towards the direction of the voice and then looked back at you. “Sorry guys I would love to continue to talk to you both, but apparently (Y/BF/N) needs my help with her dress. Um… see you later then Sherlock?” You asked with a little hope, yet you kinda already knew the answer. “Of course” Sherlock answered simply his smile fading back into its placid and serious look. You nodded and then took off towards the door. “Coming (Y/BF/N)!” You shouted before you completely disappeared out of view.

Molly smiled over at Sherlock as she stood back and watched the whole exchange between you and Sherlock. "She's a nice girl eh?" Molly said as she walked back over to her friend. "I suppose so... she seemed that way. John always talks about her in a good light" Sherlock answered looking back over to Molly. "Well you know she's a writer just like her brother" Molly said looking at where you'd once stood. "I could tell by how calloused her hands felt. She uses a pencil or a pen often instead of a computer, but she is also pretty good with a computer if you see the way her eyes look because you can tell they are tired from late nights on the computer. John told me that she's a freelance journalist and she seems to have the adventurous streak that her brother always exhibits" Sherlock said quietly, his tone analytical once again. His blue eyes darted to the clock that rested just above the door and then back to Molly. "We need to be going Molly" He said as he walked towards the door. Molly rolled her eyes playfully and followed behind him.

We were victims of the night
The chemical, physical, kryptonite
Helpless to the bass and the fading light
Oh we were bound to get together
Bound to get together
He took my arm
I don't know how it happened
We took the floor and he said,

You helped (Y/BF/N) get her dress on and then you started to fix her hair. "Always a bridesmaid and never the bride" She muttered as she sat in front of the mirror and began pinning up her (H/L), (H/C) hair. "You'll get there one day (Y/BF/N) don't worry" You said trying to be somewhat comforting. "Says the girl that got proposed to once and then turned the guy down" (Y/BF/N) retorted giving you a pout. "Excuse me for being smart and breaking up with a man that was a liar and a cheat" You growled tugging roughly on her hair in the process. "Ow! Ok so he wasn't the best guy, but I know you. You deserve the best guy out there. My point that I was trying to make is that you were almost a bride" (Y/BF/N) said apologetically. "Agreed. I was going to be a bride. Anyway... so I got to meet the best man" You answered shyly and tried to push him out of your mind. "Oh you mean Sherlock Holmes? Yeah he's a bit of a weirdo... he might be the type of guy for you if he can even fall in love" She said hopping out of her seat. "Don't be mean, I'm sure he can love. He's just like me and you a human being. Now c'mon we need to head to our places" You answered dragging your friend out of the dressing room. "Oh yeah I forgot he's gotta take you down the aisle doesn't he? Ha! I already ship it!" She laughed and walked ahead of you down the hall. “Please! I just met him and he’s my big brother’s best friend” You groaned and followed her reluctantly to the end of the Hallway. Before you could make another step towards the spot that you were supposed to stand at the front of the line, you felt butterflies rise from your chest. You closed your eyes and took a deep breath, you didn’t want to be that one bridesmaid that screwed the whole thing up for everyone else in the wedding party. “C’mon (Y/N) you’ll be fine! You did beautifully at the rehearsal” (Y/BF/N) said giving you a confident smile. You weakly smiled back, but the butterflies still clung to your insides like no one’s business. You walked past your best friend as you made your way to the front and then turned to her. “Thanks (Y/BF/N)” You said silently and then glanced up at the clock.

You stood in the doorway of the large chapel looking out at all the guests that had arrived for the occasion. You felt your heart beating so fast that you were afraid that it might beat right out of your rib cage… probably the crowd. You hated crowds. You decided to busy yourself with looking at all the simple, yet still very beautiful decorations. You had to give it to your new sister in-law, she definitely had a great sense of style. You felt a familiar presence finally show up next to you and somehow he made you feel calm again. Sherlock’s presence made you feel like everything would be alright. You looked up at your walking partner, he seemed to be thinking about something and then his attention turned to your nervous brother who waited beneath the alter for his bride. In that moment you realized why he was your brother’s best friend. You smiled at your brother and inwardly you couldn’t believe that he was getting married. You then looked up at the beautiful crystal chandeliers as you yet again, tried to chase the butterflies out of your stomach. “Are you ready?” You heard his deep baritone voice ask you causing a few goosebumps to crawl up your spine. “Y-yeah I guess so… I’m just nervous I guess” You replied looking at the floor beneath your feet. “It’s normal. You’ll be fine and I firmly believe that” Sherlock said holding out his arm for you to take. “Thanks Sherlock. I…I hope this isn’t weird, but I kinda wish that I could’ve meet you sooner. John has told me a lot about your adventures that you two would have together” You said and shyly looped your arm with his. “All things happen in time, maybe this was the right time. Your brother has been such a great friend to me, even when I was anything less of a great friend in return. I know this might not really be the time or place to discuss this, but because your brother may not be available as much, I’m in need of a new writer around 221B” Sherlock said looking straight ahead and trying to mask his emotions with a serious façade. “Wait… are you asking…” You started sounding a bit confused. “Well yes I was wondering if you would care to take your brother’s place as my assistant” Sherlock said twitching his mouth up slightly. You thought about it for a minute silently, but secretly you had a hunch that you really didn’t have to think much. From what your brother had told you the adventure was crazy and they almost got killed multiple times, but it was definitely worth it. Much more exciting than sitting behind a desk and writing articles all day for random clients. “I’m sorry if I put you in an uncomfortable position…” You heard Sherlock say after a moment. You nodded and looked back up at him. “Um… no actually I would really enjoy that if you really want me to be your ‘blogger’ as John once put it” you replied with a small smile on your face. “Of course, I don’t know where I would be without my clever blogger by my side” He answered giving you a quick wink.

Soon the wedding march began to play in the room and the crowd waited in anticipation for the wedding party to walk down the aisle. “Well then it’s show time” Sherlock said looking down at you and then back up at the altar. You nodded and tried to show a smile because you knew how fake one. As you walked with Sherlock you felt like you were floating on clouds. You didn’t feel clumsy at all and crowds around you seemed to disappear. You could see your brother standing there proudly and you couldn’t help it when your heart swelled just a little because he was happy. When you reached the end of the seemingly long aisle you both took one last glance at each other and then separated on your respected sides of the altar. Of course the line came in one by one and each couple looked more stunning then the last, each girl wore the same shade of yellow and each man wore a handsome tuxedo completed by a delicate flower. Finally the room grew completely quiet as the bride walked down the aisle with her father. You still didn’t feel right about this marriage, but she did honestly look pretty in her dress. You were just happy that everyone had finally reached the end of the aisle and nothing had gone wrong. Even the little ring bearer named Alfie and his sister the flower girl had done almost perfectly. The priest began to speak and then you zoned out because this was the part that you hated to hear, the part where your big brother would be giving his life to a stranger that you still didn’t trust.

Oh don’t you dare look back
Just keep your eyes on me
I said you’re holding back
He said shut up and dance with me
this man is my destiny
he said oh, oh, oh
shut up and dance with me

The music was pumping and the party was just getting into full swing. You still didn’t know most of the people in the crowd so you sat over in the corner and talked to Molly and (Y/BF/N) at a singles table. “I think that you should take up on his offer (Y/N), it’ll be so much better than the work you’ve been having. Think about it, that would be a place to stay and all the adventure that your little heart desires” (Y/BF/N) said trying to convince you to take up on Sherlock’s offer. “Y-yeah I mean the adventure would be fun and all… I just, I don’t know if John would be mad at me” You replied looking out at the couple dancing with each other in the crowd. You didn’t see Sherlock sadly, which made you wonder if he had left or if he was basically doing the same thing that you were at this moment. “Why would he be mad at you? I think he’d check up on you every once in a while, but I think that if he loves you like I know he does, then he’ll be happy that you got a job you enjoy” Molly said smiling warmly over at you. After that thought you really didn’t have to think any longer. You decided you wanted to be a part of the 221B family and help solve the world’s craziest mysteries. Now you just had to find Sherlock.

Soon your best friend had been asked to dance by another handsome fellow and Molly had been called to dance with Greg Lestrade, the chief inspector of Scotland Yard. You sighed and took a sip of your champagne. You stared out at all the twirling, laughing couples and wondered if you were ever going to find a partner to dance with. You were also looking for Sherlock because you still wanted to tell him that you had made up your mind.

Suddenly you had been tapped on the shoulder by a slender index finger and you turned around to face its owner. There Sherlock stood still in his handsome tuxedo from earlier. “I…Uh I noticed you were sitting alone over here and I was wondering if I could trouble you for a dance?” Sherlock asked a spark of hope shining in his bright blue eyes. “I was actually going to look for you Sherlock. I wanted to tell you that I would love to take the job as your assistant if you still want me” You answered shyly and gently took his out stretched hand. “Of course, I’m glad that you’ll be joining me. Be warned though, the things that we will do can be dangerous and I can’t always guarantee your safety” Sherlock said softly and slightly felt ashamed about some of the things that had just recently happened. “That’s why it’s an adventure isn’t it? You don’t have to always be safe to have a great story to tell. Anything is better than sitting behind a desk all day” You replied eagerly. There it was again a ghost of a smile on his lips as he led you out to the dance floor. Something told you that he was no longer as bad as John had once said he had been.

A backless dress and some beat up sneaks
My discotheque, Romeo teenage dream
I felt in my chest as he looked at me
I knew were bound to be together, bound to be together
He took my arm
I don’t know how it happened
We took the floor and he said
Oh don’t you dare look back
just keep your eyes on me
I said you’re holding back
He said shut up and dance with me
This man is my destiny
He said oh, oh, oh
shut up and dance with me

You and Sherlock twirled together among the crowd of dancers and you cracked a real smile up at the strange detective who held you in his arms. You were having the time of your life. You spotted your brother and his new wife who had both come over to see you two dancing together. “Well I see you’ve finally met a good dance partner Sherlock, be careful with her eh? She’s my sister” John chuckled as he saw both of you swaying to the music. Sherlock smirked at him and nodded in agreement. “Don’t worry John she’s safe with me” Sherlock said to your brother over the noise of the crowd and the music. Soon the happy couple disappeared back into the crowd of wedding goers leaving you and Sherlock to dance to the ever changing music. Sherlock smiled a genuine smile down at you causing a small blush to dust your cheeks. “Do you want to dance in a bit of a quieter place?” Sherlock asked you trying to be loud enough to defeat the music. You nodded quickly and felt a wave of relief wash over you because the crowd had begun to make you uncomfortable and your ears began to ring because of the loud music that busted out of the stereos.

Deep in his eyes
I think I see the future
I realize this is my last chance
He took my arm
I don’t know how it happened
we took the floor and he said

The moon was full and shining in the night sky and it gave off a soft, but warm glow upon the small pagoda. Sherlock led you outside to the small covered pagoda so that you to could be in peace and not have to worry about the crazy, and drunken people that you would be sure to have to deal with later. The crickets hummed softly along with the gentle lights of the fireflies that danced into the night air. You couldn’t take the smile away from your face as you looked up at you tall, and quite attractive dance partner. “I’m glad that you considered my offer, it’ll be nice to have someone else around the flat again because I’m getting bored of talking to myself” Sherlock chuckled. That was first time that you heard him actually laugh and you could describe it as a beautiful sound. His voice was deep and so was his laughter. “Well I just hope I’m what you’re looking for. I’ve never done a crime report or anything close to this magnitude” You explained with a bit of a blush dusting your cheeks. “Well I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it. You’re brother always told me you were quite the clever one when you two were growing up. Anyway, welcome to Baker street Ms. (Y/N) Watson” Sherlock said with a smile. You smiled back and rested your head unconsciously on his shoulder as you two danced away into the night. A very interesting night indeed.

Don’t you dare look back
just keep your eyes on me
I said you’re holding back
He said shut up and dance with me
this man is my destiny
he said oh, oh, oh
shut up and dance with me
I don't own anything. Sherlock belongs to BBC. You belong to yourself. "Shut up and Dance" belongs to Walk the moon. I hope everyone enjoys this one shot!
